Emergency management in the earthquake in Calabria-Sicily on December 28, 1908

On December 28, 1908, at 5:20 a.m., one of the most powerful earthquakes in Italy's seismic history struck the Strait of Messina area, triggering a tsunami and causing death and destruction to Reggio Calabria, Messina, and towns along the coast.
To mark the 100th anniversary of the tragic event, the Department has published a book that retraces those days from a civil protection perspective, focusing on the organization and coordination of rescue operations, the forces involved, the logic and criteria that guided the rescuers, the initiatives and measures taken to cope with the emergency, and the dynamics of the relationship between victims and rescuers.
