Severe weather in Emilia-Romagna: National Service activities
The Department is supporting regional civil protection structures. A team of experts is currently operational (Updated at 3 p.m.)
In response to the severe wave of bad weather that struck northern Italy since September 17, particularly affecting the regions of Emilia-Romagna and parts of Marche and Toscana, the Civil Protection Department promptly took action to assist regional authorities. This included deploying a team of experts to the affected areas.
Severe weather in Emilia-Romagna has caused many rivers to overflow in the provinces of Bologna, Ravenna, and Forlì Cesena. As a preventive measure due to the flooding, some citizens living in at-risk areas have been evacuated; a total of 2,462 people are still out of their houses, sheltered at facilities made available by the municipalities: 943 in the province of Bologna, 1329 in that of Ravenna, 188 in Forlì-Cesana and 2 in Modena.
Over 150 civil protection volunteers from national organizations are currently providing rescue and assistance to the population, assisting with evacuations, and securing operations in the area affected by severe weather. Specifically, volunteers from organizations such as the National Alpine Association (ANA), Misericordie, Italian Red Cross (CRI), National Corps of Alpine and Speleological Rescue (CNSAS), Swift Water Rescue Team Toscana, and Italian Relief Corps of the Order of Malta (CISOM), along with local volunteers, are actively involved in these efforts.
Approximately 550 firefighters are currently operating in the affected areas, primarily in the province of Ravenna. They are involved in rescue operations and evacuating people from areas difficult to reach by land. They are also working on emptying flooded areas and containing embankments. Mobile units from Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lombardia, Toscana, Veneto, Umbria, and the Autonomous Province of Trento, consisting of 169 units and 41 vehicles, are also deployed in the area.
From a meteorological perspective, we are currently experiencing weak rainfall in some areas of Piemonte and Lombardia. At the same time, there is no evidence of rainfall over the Regions affected by the recent bad weather, Marche and Emilia-Romagna. The minimum depression is shifting towards the Balkans, leading to considerable improvement starting today and continuing in the coming days.
