Etna: situation as of 25 July 2011

Ban of accessing over  2920 m extended to 27 July

We publish data and information on Etna eruptive activity collected by the Central Functional Centre for Volcanic Risk of the Civil Protection Department, through the main monitoring and surveillance systems.

Etna eruptive activity goes on as registered over the last few days. From 9.31 p.m. of 24 July monitoring stations of Ingv - Catania section registered a gradual increase of the volcanic tremoc and strombolian activity at the pit crater of the south-east crater.

From 4.18 a.m. surveillance cameras of Catania Ingv observed a small lava flow moving towards Valle del Bove.
Ash emissions, started aroud 9.31 p.m. and finished at 8.51 a.m. of 25 July affected the east-south-east sector of the volcano. There were no consequences on air traffic of the Catania airport Fontanarossa, that is currently open.

The total ban of accessing the volcano over 2920 m (proximity of the Philosopher Tower) is extended to 27 July, either on the north and south sides, as provided by the ordinance of the Prefect of Catania.

The Central Functional Centre continues the activity of surveillance of the phenomena through its Ingv Competence Centres of Catania and the University of Florence  through the operating structures of Alpine Rescue of Guardia di Finanza and Forest Corps of Sicily Region.
