The civil protection glossary in Italian Sign Language for inclusive prevention

The goal is to ensure complete accessibility to key civil protection terms

Glossario in LIS

On September 23, in celebration of the International Day of Sign Languages, Abili a proteggere launched a new initiative focused on accessibility and inclusive communication: a civil protection glossary in Italian Sign Language (LIS).

The program involves the weekly publication of short videos on social media channels and the YouTube channel of Abili a proteggere, in which a term from the civil protection glossary is translated into Italian Sign Language (LIS).

The objective is twofold:

  • To inform and raise awareness among deaf individuals about key concepts and terms in civil protection, making them easier to understand and more widely recognized.
  • To help civil protection operators use accessible language by providing them with basic tools in Italian Sign Language, enhancing communication during emergencies.

The videos are designed to be universally accessible, making them suitable for a wide audience. In addition to Italian Sign Language interpretation, they feature audio descriptions and subtitles. The background has also been optimized to enhance accessibility for visually impaired individuals.

The first video, released on September 23, provides a simple and clear explanation of civil protection and its role in safeguarding individuals and communities. In the following episodes, additional terms from the glossary will be explored, enabling users to gradually build a small vocabulary in Italian Sign Language related to prevention and protection.

This initiative is part of a larger program launched by the Civil Protection Department in collaboration with "Abili a proteggere." Its goal is to promote a culture of inclusive civil protection that takes into account the specific needs of people with disabilities. The program aims to ensure that everyone has equal access to information, emergency relief, and assistance measures.
