\nShare something about yourself and explain why you chose to volunteer for the Jubilee.
\nMy journey began with the scouts, an experience that taught me the value of service and care for others from a young age. When I learned about the opportunity to volunteer for the Jubilee, I immediately felt compelled to be there. It was a precious opportunity to continue this journey, to keep giving time and energy to something greater. What moves me the most is seeing how, sometimes, it takes so little to make someone feel welcomed: a smile, a hug, a small gesture. I always try to be there and make myself available for those in need, even in the simplest gestures.
\nWhat is your role during the event?
\nDuring the Jubilee of Youth, I am managing one of the pavilions at the Fiera di Roma. Our team consists of about 20 volunteers, and we organize ourselves into 6-hour shifts to ensure that the pavilion is staffed 24 hours a day. We even have night shifts from midnight to 6 a.m. because there may always be someone in need of assistance. We are there precisely for this, to ensure continuous welcome and support for the pilgrims.
\nDid any particular episode resonate with you recently? Something exciting or funny?
\nJust this morning, we experienced a scene that made us smile. While having breakfast and still a bit sleepy—it's hard to focus before having coffee—a volunteer walked by with a Bluetooth speaker in his pocket. He looked exhausted, but the music blared from the small speaker at full volume, and soon the entire pavilion was dancing. As he made his way through the crowd, surrounded by music, he maintained a serious and tired demeanour while a spontaneous party erupted around him. It was wonderful to witness such a moment, helping to lift our spirits and share the joy of being together.
\nOne last question. Do you think you will continue to volunteer after this experience?
\nI have previously volunteered at various jubilee events and plan to continue doing so throughout 2025. Because of my field experience, I was assigned to the Fiera di Roma for this Youth event. Volunteering is a fundamental part of who I am. Being able to help others is something I feel deeply passionate about, and I intend to keep pursuing this even after the jubilee year.

\nIn life, I am an engineering geologist. I became a civil protection volunteer in 2007, the year I finished high school. I believe that the motivation to become a volunteer comes from within, stemming from a genuine desire to help others. When you watch national emergencies on television, the urge to lend a hand can drive you to join a volunteer organization.
\nWhat is your activity for the Jubilee of Youth?
\nAs a civil protection volunteer for the Lazio Region, I am responsible for special projects, including the Jubilee event. This involves setting up an area for the assembly of rescuers, which will provide 4,000 beds and include four dining halls with 800 seats each. Each dining hall has the potential to serve 2,400 meals in three shifts, a setup that had never been tested before. In this context, the Jubilee offers a significant opportunity for civil protection. Unlike emergencies, where time is limited and only established procedures can be followed, this event allows us to plan and execute our actions while making adjustments as needed. For instance, we had the chance to explore an innovative method for the field kitchens that is already being used in the catering industry.
\nHow was this innovative method for field kitchens developed, and what does it involve?
\nWe have collaborated with biologists, professional chefs, and various other experts in the catering industry. They encouraged us to look beyond traditional cooking methods. Typically, camp kitchens are designed to serve a specific number of meals per hour. However, following the earthquake in Central Italy in 2016, there was a significant increase in the number of rescuers after the second tremor at the end of October, which led to a heightened demand for meals. Although we managed to provide cafeteria services, it came with some challenges. To improve our approach, we experimented with a method that involves early preparations and overproduction. This means we prepare a larger quantity of food, quickly cool it down using blast chillers, vacuum seal it, and store it in cold rooms.
\nIn the camp, a dedicated field kitchen is available for individuals with allergies, intolerances, or special dietary needs. When did you first recognize this necessity?
\nDuring the 2012 earthquake emergency in Emilia-Romagna, the diverse backgrounds of the affected individuals highlighted the necessity for providing various types of meals. Specifically, at the camp in San Possidonio, located in the province of Modena, we needed to adapt the field kitchens to accommodate the dietary requirements of different religions, particularly during the Ramadan period.
\nWhat do you expect from this experience?
\nWe are currently treating this as a major exercise. We took the time to plan and test this new method with a large number of participants. The experience we gain from this will far exceed what we could learn during an actual emergency. Preparedness is essential; this is the key takeaway.

Based on this assessment, patients either receive initial treatment on-site or are transferred to hospitals, following a colour-coded protocol to guide these decisions. These facilities are staffed by personnel specially trained to handle large-scale emergencies and can be set up in temporary locations, such as tents for events like the Youth Jubilee, or in existing healthcare venues that are not directly affected by the emergency. In cases of significant incidents, the medical post serves a dual purpose: it provides immediate medical assistance and helps reduce the burden on hospitals by preventing unnecessary admissions, playing a crucial role in determining which patients need hospital care.
\nWho works in an advanced medical post, and what skills are required for these positions?
\nThe medical post employs doctors and nurses who are used to working in emergencies daily. They receive specialized training for large-scale emergencies and events, such as the incident that occurred in Tor Vergata on August 2-3. In addition to healthcare personnel, the medical post also employs technical staff. Each medical post is equipped with ambulances for transportation and personnel who manage the logistics of the field facility, which includes assembly, maintenance, and daily operations. This work is highly coordinated and specialized, essential for ensuring the smooth operation of the field facility. Staff members must be able to act quickly in complex environments while maintaining high standards of safety and care, even under challenging logistical conditions and with a potentially large and diverse user base.
\nHow do you plan to approach the Jubilee experience, and what are your expectations for managing this event?
\nThe Youth Jubilee represents an important challenge but also a great professional opportunity for all of us. We have been preparing for almost two years, working closely with all the other emergency services, including the Fire Department, the National Civil Protection Service, regional and metropolitan civil protection agencies, and the police. Thanks to this synergy, built up through numerous preparatory meetings, we have created a solid and cohesive response network, which certainly enriches our daily work. From a healthcare perspective, despite dealing with young people, our main concern is exposure to high temperatures. The greatest risk is linked to the heat: we expect cases of dehydration or fainting typical of the summer period, but we are ready to deal with any type of intervention, even if these other eventualities are certainly minor compared to the problems associated with the heat.

Each medical post is equipped with ambulances for transportation and personnel who manage the logistics of the field facility, which includes assembly, maintenance, and daily operations. This work is highly coordinated and specialized, essential for ensuring the smooth operation of the field facility. Staff members must be able to act quickly in complex environments while maintaining high standards of safety and care, even under challenging logistical conditions and with a potentially large and diverse user base.
\r\n\r\nHow do you plan to approach the Jubilee experience, and what are your expectations for managing this event?
\r\n\r\nThe Youth Jubilee represents an important challenge but also a great professional opportunity for all of us. We have been preparing for almost two years, working closely with all the other emergency services, including the Fire Department, the National Civil Protection Service, regional and metropolitan civil protection agencies, and the police. Thanks to this synergy, built up through numerous preparatory meetings, we have created a solid and cohesive response network, which certainly enriches our daily work. From a healthcare perspective, despite dealing with young people, our main concern is exposure to high temperatures. The greatest risk is linked to the heat: we expect cases of dehydration or fainting typical of the summer period, but we are ready to deal with any type of intervention, even if these other eventualities are certainly minor compared to the problems associated with the heat.
