The Civil Protection Department will participate for the second consecutive year at the Turin International Book Fair, which will take place at Lingotto Fiere from Thursday, May 9, until Monday, May 13, 2024. The theme inspiring the XXXVI edition of the Fair is Imaginary life, a diverse topic that allows the Department to to tell its story through its own tales and those of others.

The Department's booth is located in the Oval Pavilion and it consists of an exhibition area and a talk area.

\n

In the exhibition area, visitors will have the opportunity to explore civil protection's evolution across the country's major emergencies through a timeline and learn about the stories beyond History.

\n

During the Fair, the Department will launch eQuiLIBRI, a new project aimed at building a civil protection library open to different languages and literary genres. This library will be realized with everyone's contribution. The first selection of books presented at the Department's booth will be joined by books suggested by visitors who want to participate with their reading recommendations.

\n

Fully in tune with this project, the talk area will host a series of discussions, organized in collaboration with Lucy, aiming to create a space where authors and experts can discuss civil protection issues from different perspectives. On Friday, May 10, at 11 a.m., the first guest, Nicola Lagioia, will introduce the events of the following days together with Deputy Head of Department Titti Postiglione. The events will feature Marco Rossari, Nadia Terranova, Donatella Di Pietrantonio, Francesca Mannocchi, and Rossella Postorino.

The booth will host themed meetings on poetry, art, and comics with Franco Arminio, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Roberto Gagnor, and Mattia Surroz.

The Department will also join the program of events organized by the Fair with the meeting \"Tra rischi e sostenibilità: immaginiamo insieme il nostro futuro - Between risks and sustainability: let's imagine our future together\", a topic on which the Head of Department Fabrizio Curcio and Nicola Lagioia will discuss. The appointment, moderated by Giusi Fasano, will occur on Sunday, May 12, at 10:45 a.m. in Pavilion 1, Sala Rosa.

Finally, Bookstock, a space dedicated to schools to share, grow, and experiment, will host initiatives for young people. The Department has planned specific activities to help young visitors discover the risks of the area and make conscious choices. As part of this initiative, students will engage in creative reading sessions and fun workshop activities centered around the comic strip\"L'attimo decisivo\" from the I don't take risks project.

The Department of Civil Protection, in partnership with the CIMA Research Foundation, is planning a conference to learn more about and share the latest research in humanities and social sciences that could be relevant to civil protection. The event is planned for September 23 and 24, 2024, in Rome at the Department of Civil Protection headquarters.

Since its establishment, the civil protection system has found in the scientific community an essential scientific-technical support, enhanced over the years with leading expertise from the STEM disciplines. Now, the urge has emerged to integrate into the system the knowledge resulting from humanities and social sciences research: the aim is to provide new sharing spaces, connect with another research environment, and promote a holistic approach to the topics of risk reduction and management, environmental and land protection, focusing on humans and communities. Furthermore, the call provides a significant opportunity to meet and learn about each other.

By May 20, lecturers, researchers, experts, and authors can register and submit a short abstract for a presentation or poster on studies related to the topics of the conference by filling out this form: https://forms.office.com/e/3f65qnFPNu

The Municipality of Bacoli, the Campania Region, and the Civil Protection Department will hold a meeting on May 6 at 3:30 p.m. to inform the citizens about the ongoing phenomenon of bradyseism in the volcanic area of the Phlegraean Fields. The meeting will take place at the Parco Borbonico del Fusaro, Sala dell'Ostrichina in Bacoli.

The event, which follows the one held on April 11 in Pozzuoli, is part of the Communication Plan developed by the Campania Region in cooperation with the Department under Decree-Law 140 of October 12. This plan aims to provide the public with the latest information regarding the ongoing crisis of bradyseism and the measures implemented by the Decree-Law.

During the meeting, officials will answer frequently asked questions from citizens regarding the response of the civil protection system, as well as provide scientific perspectives.

Other than the Mayor of Pozzuoli, who is the host of the event, the Head of the Civil Protection Department, along with Deputy Head, Regional Councillor for Security, Law, and Immigration, Director General of Civil Protection of Campania Region, Prefect of Naples, and Mayor's delegate are attending as representatives of the institutions. The Phlegraean Fields are a vast active volcanic area affected by the phenomenon of \"bradyseism\": a ground deformation involving slow lowering (subsidence) phases alternating with more rapid uplift phases, the latter generally followed by shallow, low-magnitude earthquakes. 

\n

A new uplift phase of the Phlegraean Fields caldera began in 2005 and is continuing. Since 2023, the frequency of earthquakes has gradually increased. The sequence peaked with the September 27 and October 2 earthquakes, which had magnitudes of 4.2 and 4.0, respectively.  

\n

As a response to the ongoing bradyseismic crisis, volcano monitoring activities were strengthened, and, more broadly, prevention efforts of the Civil Protection System have been intensified. In particular, Decree-Law No. 140 of October 12, 2023, provided urgent measures to prevent seismic risk related to the bradyseismic phenomenon in the Phlegraean Fields area.

The Phlegraean Fields are a vast active volcanic area affected by the phenomenon of \"bradyseism\": a ground deformation involving slow lowering (subsidence) phases alternating with more rapid uplift phases, the latter generally followed by shallow, low-magnitude earthquakes. 

\r\n\r\n

A new uplift phase of the Phlegraean Fields caldera began in 2005 and is continuing. Since 2023, the frequency of earthquakes has gradually increased. The sequence peaked with the September 27 and October 2 earthquakes, which had magnitudes of 4.2 and 4.0, respectively.  

\r\n\r\n

As a response to the ongoing bradyseismic crisis, volcano monitoring activities were strengthened, and, more broadly, prevention efforts of the Civil Protection System have been intensified. In particular, Decree-Law No. 140 of October 12, 2023, provided urgent measures to prevent seismic risk related to the bradyseismic phenomenon in the Phlegraean Fields area.

IT-alert is the new public warning system that provides immediate information to the population. It broadcasts alert messages to mobile phones in a specific geographical area in case of upcoming or ongoing major emergencies or disasters.

From 13 February 2024, IT-alert is operational for the following civil protection hazards: 

\n

•  Nuclear accident or radiological emergency situation
\n•  Major accidents at industrial facilities;
\n•  Collapse of a large dam;
\n•  Volcanic activity in the areas of the Phlegraean Fields, Vesuvius, and at the island of Vulcano.  

\n

For the risk scenarios of heavy rainfall, earthquake-generated tsunami, and Stromboli volcanic activity, the testing phase has been extended for another year.

\n

At this stage of first operativity of the system, the Department of Civil Protection is in charge of sending IT-alert messages. However, in the future, as provided by the Directive of the Minister for Civil Protection and Sea Policies of February 7, 2023, all parts of the National Civil Protection Service will be allowed to use IT-alert.

The national public warning system integrates the existing information and communication methods for different risk scenarios in order to promote the rapid dissemination of early information on potential dangerous situations to the public and the implementation of self-protection measures in relation to the specific risk. All relevant information on the public warning system can be found at www.it-alert.gov.it/en.
