Task Force of the Department in Sicily, to support the affected areas

CCS Catania sciame sismico etnaThe Civil Protection System - fully operating right after the 4,8 magnitude quake that hit the province of Catania in the early hours of today - is still at work carrying out monitoring and verification activities on the territory.

The work of the Operational Committee, meeting at the Civil Protection Department for the earthquake swarm in the Etna area, continued throughout the morning in connection with the Prefecture of Catania, where the Head of Department Angelo Borrelli - after an inspection of the affected area - chaired a technical summit dealing with the Region, Prefecture and Municipalities involved.

The Assistance Coordination Center of Catania and the Municipal Operating Centers of Aci Catena, Acireale, Aci Sant'Antonio, Santa Venerina and Zafferana Etnea are active and at work in the territories.

A great deal of damage has been reported following the collapses, which also caused some injuries.
The priorities of these hours, also underlined by the Head of the Civil Protection Department Angelo Borrelli, concern the assistance to the population and the checks on viability. Regional teams are working to manage the needs of people outside the home and for the first assessments on housing, public facilities, the network of essential services and the road network.

Also several buildings of historical and artistic interest got damaged, on which the technicians of the Regional Superintendency for cultural assets and activities are assisted by damage control activities, assisted by a section of the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage.

Following the Prefecture meeting in Catania, the Operational Committee concluded the work.
The Department continues to monitor the evolution of the situation through Sala Situazione Italia n close collaboration with the research bodies and operational structures in the area, and a Department Task Force has reached the affected areas to support the municipal operational centers in managing the emergencies, with particular regard to assistance to the population.
