Wood fires: new mission of Italian Canadairs in Albania
September 1, 2011The fire-fighting fleet intervention is part of the European Mechanism
The Italian air fleet keeps its commitment in Albania to support the extinguishing operation of fires that affected various areas of the country. Two Canadairs took off today from Brindisi airport for a new mission. The first one operated in Helmes, in Kavaja district, and the second in Balgjajt, in Dibra district. Water supplies were made respectively in the Adriatic sea and Ulza lake.
The Italian intervention is part of the European Civil Protection Mechanism, following the 25 August request of Albania. This is the third mission. A first Canadair intervened on 26 August in the areas of Valona and Miras, close to the border with Greece; two more operated on August 30, in Mati district. The first two missions were composed by a total of nine flights, 22 flying hours and 75 water drops.
Kristalina Georgieva, Commissioner responsible for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, thanked personally Italy for the “prompt and effective commitment”.
