Cavour aircraft carrier and the first 380 tents arrive in HaitiFebruary 2, 2010
A flight with 380 tents donated by Civil Protection regional sites has landed yesterday, Feb 1st, in Santo Domingo. They will be transported to Port au Prince by tomorrow.
A second cargo with 300 tents is expected during the next few days.
Yesterday, Cavour aircraft carrier arrived in Haiti as well, and tonight it will arrive in Santo Domingo port, in order to start unloading the material and transport needed for the organization of the Military Office camp.
Meanwhile, some humanitarian aid for NGO’s and Red Cross have been transported from the Cavour carrier to the field hospital; on one of the first flights, a team of Italian and Brasilian doctors arrived on the island. Yesterday they met with the medical staff from Saint Damien and from the Civil Protection Department’s field hospital, where some 500 people have been treated so far.
After the arrival of the carrier, Guido Bertolaso, chief of the Civil Protection Department, and Ignazio La Russa, Minister of Defence, met in order to discuss sanitary and logistic operations.
