Psycho-social activity in Abruzzo
In Abruzzo, the very start of the emergency sees activation of psycho-social assistance according to the guidelines of “General criteria for psycho-social assistance to be implemented in catastrophes” of 13 June 2006.
During the first hours after the earthquake, support goes mainly to the victims’ families. From 8 April psycho-social assistance is also extended to the evacuee camps, where activity is directed at responding to the needs of the population with special attention for the elderly, minors and adults showing psychological distress. The activity is carried out by voluntary civil protection associations working in teams with the aim of strengthening and helping response by the regional health system and social services of the municipality of L’Aquila.
During the post-emergency phase, psycho-social support continues to be given to people, in particular to children and adolescents.
