The Earthquake Simulation Platform
The Italian Civil Protection brings the Earthquake Simulation Platform of the "Before, immediately, tomorrow" exhibition to the EU Civil Protection Forum , which was held in Brussels on 25-26 November.
The Platform reproduces the effects of the earthquake that hit L’Aquila and Abruzzo on 6 April 2009. The exhibition also shows a collection of photos taken shortly after the quake and videos showing the interventions of the Civil Protection. It will be open to the public until 3 December from 9 am to 6 pm and from 9 am to 1 pm on 4 December in Rond Point Schuman.
A part of the exhibition is devoted to the C.A.S.E. project, Seismically Isolated and Ecosustainable Houses for people who lost their homes due to the earthquake.
The Earthquake Simulator is a sophisticated device that can reproduce what happens during an earthquake in three different situations: ground-floor or street level, fifth floor of an anti-seismic building or fifth floor of a seismically isolated structure. The Platform is set up as a furnished room where you can observe the effects of an earthquake on common household objects.
The simulator makes it easy to understand:
• what is an earthquake, seen as a sequence of rapid movements of the ground;
• how during an earthquake the movements of a structure are amplified, both in amplitude and in length, in comparison with the movements of the ground;
• what are the benefits granted to people and objects by seismically isolating structures.
An improved knowledge of the earthquake increases awareness and helps keep panic under control. The experience of the Earthquake Simulator is a step forward towards prevention.
