Eurosot 2005 drill
Presentation
The international exercise “Eurosot 2005" - Eastern Sicily Earthquake – forms part of the program of activities envisaged by the Community Mechanism of Civil Protection established upon the Decision of the European Council in October 2001.
The objective of the exercise is to develop more efficient forms of collaboration between the Civil Protections of countries in the European Union, particularly where seismic risk is concerned.
Eurosot 2005 foresees the simulation of a strong seismic event in the area of Eastern Sicily (in the provinces of Catania, Siracusa and Ragusa, for a total of 1,727,414 inhabitants), with grave consequences also in the industrial district of Priolo Gargallo.
The international exercise involves all the units and components of the Civil Protection National Service and the participation of France, Greece, Portugal, Sweden and Great Britain, in both the preparation phase (core group), as well as throughout the exercise, through the dispatch of experts and SAR search and rescue teams.
Also taking part in the simulation as international Observers are representatives from the civil protections of the remaining 19 Member States of the EU and from International Organisations (United Nations System, NATO countries, the European economic area and the Euromed partnership).
Eurosot 2005 takes place in Sicily from 13 to 16 October 2005.
