The Earthquake Simulation Platform

Italy at the European Civil Protection Forum

Italy at the European Civil Protection Forum

There are three areas set aside for Italian projects at the European Civil Protection Forum in Brussels. Two are being run by the Italian Civil Protection Department, which is presenting the Euromed Programme and the training courses set up under the European Civil Protection Mechanism, whereas one is set aside for the Pisa Fire Brigade, which is presenting a “rubble field” for exercises and simulations.

The Training Courses. On its “Joint Italian Civil Protection Training Centre” stand, the Italian Civil Protection Department is presenting the training courses set up under the European Civil Protection Mechanism  along with the S. Anna College, the project leader, in conjunction with the Fire Brigade.
The courses, which have been run for the first time as of this year, are of four types: the basic course, the advanced course, the advanced course update and the media and safety course. They are directed at European civil protection workers and set out to create the skills for use both in their own countries and abroad.
The “Joint Training Centre” was set up to create training courses combining the spheres of covered by the Sant’Anna College (training and research) with the National Civil Protection System (prevention, emergency intervention, operations in the field).

The Euromed Programme. The Prevention, Preparedness and Response to Disasters Programme (PPRD South), be the disasters natural or caused by man, funded by the European Union and headed by the Italian Civil Protection Department, along with France, Algeria, Egypt and the UNISDR, is also represented at the Forum.
The programme involves 14 Mediterranean and Balkan countries (Albania, Algeria, Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Montenegro, Palestine, Syria, Turkey and Tunisia) and sets out to bring the civil protection systems of the partners to the European Mechanism into line and to foster a disaster management culture based on prevention rather than response.

The “rubble field”. The Pisa Fire brigade is presenting a project reproducing a “rubble field” to scale, with 100 metres of tunnel, 11 shafts and 20 positions for simulating operations. The field can also be used for integrated technical and medical relief operations.
