The Office, also using the Knowledge Centres, carries out forecast, assessment and prevention for hydrogeological, hydrological, environmental, technological, wood fires and interface mitigation risks.

It hands the activities of the central Functional Centre and guiding and coordinating activities of the network of peripheral Functional Centres. It provides the necessary technical support to the activities of the National Commission for the forecast and prevention of major risks.

As part of the activities and post-emergency works, the Service performs the duties of organizing the administrative system of inspections and operations monitoring related to the risks of competence.

It provides for the management of the list of staff of the Civil Protection Department, which has the technical expertise and administrative arrangements provided for by the Legislative Decree No 163 of 12 April 2006 and coordinates the activities of technical staff for the 8 per thousand.

 The Office is divided into:
