The Service performs the activities of the core functionality and guiding and coordinating the network of functionally decentralized centers, and of territorial competence centers. 

It promotes, develops, manufactures and verification, including through the Centres of Expertise, methods, tools and products to improve forecasting capabilities, and proficiency and to optimize the operation of the network of Functional Centres.

It promotes initiatives in the areas of predicting and monitoring of weather and climate of interest of civil protection activities, contributing to the initiatives of the related risks.

Finally, it promotes - in coordination with the Office of seismic and volcanic risk - activities for the establishment of administrative and operational hazards Central Functional Centre.
