Sanitary Risk Emergencies

Organizing medical assistance is one of the most complex aspects when dealing with a catastrophe as the facilities must be able to guarantee a rapid response right from the first hours in order to be able assist as many people as possible. The Department has the role of coordinating operations in emergencies, to help with the assistance and to send camp facilities – Pma –, specialized teams of doctors and nurses, medical and basic supplies; first aid assistance is supplemented, where necessary, by camp hospitals and personnel for medium to long term medical assistance.

The principal medical operations in Italian and foreign emergencies, where the Department has taken an active part either independently or was included in expeditions coordinated by the European Civil Protection Mechanism.

Ospedale modulare in CileOn February 27, 2010 an earthquake of magnitude 8.8 Richter scale hits the Republic of Chile. Italy contributes to the relief with the installation of a field hospital in Talca, 240 km from Santiago, which complements the activities of regional hospital partly unusable. The hospital is equipped with an emergency room with operating rooms, intensive care and radiology, area analysis and hospital area with 60 beds. The hospital idonated by the Fatebenefratelli association, and is delivered and installed by the Department of Civil Protection.

Haiti earthquake - 2010

Posto Medico Avanzato ad HaitiOn January 12, 2010 an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 Richter scale hit the island of Haiti, near the capital Port Au Prince. Italy participates in the aid by sending a PMA - advanced medical post with an operating room, medical supplies, basic necessities, tents and other materials for the setting up of reception areas. Many goods are transported by the aircraft carrier Cavour, which with its  onboard hospital contributes to the health activities on the island. Operations together with the Civil Protection Department Group emergency surgery hospital in Pisa, Ares Marche regions, the Red Cross, non-governmental organizations and the Armed Forces.

China earthquake - 2008
Medici e infermieri in Cina On May 12, 2008 an earthquake of magnitude 7.9 Richter scale hit the Sichuan region of China, at about 90 kilometers from the capital of the province, Chengdu. The Civil Protection Department is activated immediately by sending 240 tents distributed in Sichuan Province. A few days later in the town of Xiaude, The Department also sends a PMA of the University of Pisa, which is installed near the local hospital damaged by the earthquake, and is made operational with the collaboration of Italian doctors and nurses.

Intervention in Albania - 2008

Partenza aiutiOn March 15, 2008 on the outskirts of the town of Vora, Albania, an explosion occurs in a military depot that also involves the nearest town. There are dead and many wounded people, with burns of III grade. The Civil Protection Department sends its staff to a special service, with flight C130, for the transporation of 12 serious burn victims from the hospital fromTirana hospital to Brindisi - Burn Unit Centre, where they are successfully treated and then transferred back to the country of origin.

 

Humanitarian mission in Libano - 2006
Carico aiuti per BeirutIn the summer of 2006 Beirut, Lebanon, was hit by several bombings. Italy opened a humanitarian corridor and sent on the ship San Marco of the Italian Navy, about 500 tons of goods First aid - medicines, food, and food products for infants, hygienic and medical tents, beds and blankets -. With the goods and an ambulance donated dall'Anpas Pma University of Pisa arrive in Lebanon. The operation involves the whole national civil protection system and is in agreement with the local government and international organizations active in the country.


Pakistan earthquake - 2005
Aree di accoglienza in PakistanOn 8 October 2005 an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 degrees on the Richter scale struck Pakistan in the Kashmir region on the border with India. The quake had a tremendous impact on the ground, causing over 70,000 deaths, many injuries, destroying homes and most of the local health structures. Italy answered to the call for help with the construction of a community center for the displaced and a field hospital with triage, first aid area, operating room, hospital patients and pharmacy area.

Ossetia humanitarian mission - 2005
Missione a BeslanOn 31 August 2005, a commando unit made up of Chechen and Ingush terrorists broke into the school in Beslan, causing 340 deaths, keeping 1,200 people hostage of which 170 children, threatening to blow up the school in case of break-in, and caused deep fear and anxiety in hostages. The Civil Protection Department carried out a first step in sending medicines and medical equipment and organizing a humanitarian aid fundraising for the population.

South Sudan: recontruction and health intervention - 2005
Ospedale Beneamino Andreatta in SudanOn 9 January 2005 a peace agreement ended the civil war between North and South Sudan. The conflict, the longest and most dramatic of the African continent, put the region of South Sudan in a very critical condition. The Italian government instructs the Civil Protection Department to launch a humanitarian intervention for the construction of a Bailey bridge, and, in cooperation with the NGOs, Doctors with Africa Cuamm, to make  the hospital in the county of Yirol active and operative.

South-east Asia earth and sea quake - 2004

Ospedale in Sri Lanka

On 26 December 2004, an earthquake of magnitude 9.1 Richter scale creates a tsunami of frightening proportions, affecting the coasts of countries bordering the Bay of Bengal, causing about 300,000 victims. Italy participates in the early days in the rescue, and immediately responds with donations from the people for reconstruction of hospitals, schools and homes in Sri Lanka. The Italian government instructs the Department of Civil Protection to coordinate and implement interventions Italians. On the health plan, the main actions are the integration of Matara hospital with the construction of an Emergency Room and the complete rebuilding of the hospital Kinniya.

Iran earthquake - 2003
Aree di accoglienzaOn 26 December 2003 an earthquake of magnitude 6.6 Richter scale hits southeastern Iran. The Italian government responds to call for help of the Iranian government, immediately sending a team to search and rescue of the population. A few days after tents for reception areas  are set up by the Civil Protection Department of the  and an advanced medical post, made available from the hospital in Pisa.

Algeria earthquake- 2003
Partenza aiuti per AlgeriaOn May 21, 2003 an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 Richter scale hits Algeria, 70 km east of Algiers. The Civil Protection Department intervenes during the phase of first aid and search for victims under the rubble, door curtains and materials necessary to the preparation of reception areas and identify, together with local authorities, the areas best suited for their installation.
